A while back i started a group on Facebook, in the hopes of starting up a hackerspace in Jozi.
Due to a lack of interest from members (only had about 10 or so) the project got canned. I think i was a bit too early, and most people in ZA had not yet heard of Arduino hacking etc. There was some activity at the time in Durban but really really limited.
In any case, looks like ZA finally has it’s first true Hacker Space, check it out at http://www.house4hack.co.za/
Been following this movie for a while, the trailer has just been released. While the last movie from Ronnie Aptekar (Jeruslema), was bit contrived and slow at times, im hoping this will be much better.
Looks like it has a lot of emotional scenes, i got goose bumps watching the trailer. Dont forget to like Material The Movie on facebook as well.Your thoughts?
One for the geeks, party rockers created with a bunch of floppy disks.

I read this with some amusement, why?
As i have been there. I once hoarded books. It took me a while but my will was eventually broken by neccasity.
2011 was the first year that i actually got rid of some books. This hoarding was so bad i actually found a copy of ‘Flash 4 Bible’. Flash 4 was released in 1999 (Yes i know, i would prob never have used it ever again!)
I filled an entire car booth with books to give away, and the only way i could get them to the library we dontated to with out breaking my back, was with a trolley.
Currently have a box full of books in my car boot, and there is still about 3-4 boxes worth of books/comics that i cant bare to part ways with.
Do you hoard books?
The movie event of the year, after Twilight Breaking Dawn ;)
Can’t wait to see this. As a kid i grew up reading both TIN TIN & Asterix & Oblix (P.s When are we going to see a really good Asterix and Oblix Movie).
Every other week i would borrow one of these from the library, i must have read every single one released, several times over.
Found this article on Future 100 which was published in the sowetan.
Just read this on Freakanomics:
A recent study in the Journal of Finance by Zhi Da and Paul Gao of the University of Notre Dame shows that data from public Google searches can be used to beat the stock market by up to ten percentage points per year. Similar findings were released last month by researchers at the University of Kansas.
The abstract for the research states:
We propose a new and direct measure of investor attention using search frequency in Google (Search Volume Index (SVI)). In a sample of Russell 3000 stocks from 2004 to 2008, we find that SVI (1) is correlated with but different from existing proxies of investor attention; (2) captures investor attention in a more timely fashion and (3) likely measures the attention of retail investors. An increase in SVI predicts higher stock prices in the next 2 weeks and an eventual price reversal within the year. It also contributes to the large first-day return and long-run underperformance of IPO stocks.
Interestingly, i posted about something similar a few years ago, while i did not go into too much detail nor was this ‘research’ my initial results indicated there was a correlation between search volumes and share prices.
I recently came up with an idea to analyze search volumes and compare these to the increase/decrease of listed companies on the JSE, to determine if there is any correlation.
When you consider search volumes it’s an indication of Interest in a company by all stake holders: Investors, employees, customers and the general public. While the share price is an indication of the market environment as well as investors confidence in the company.
A friend just sent me this, bloody awesome.
Listen, this behavior is disgusting. The guy is totally right, there is no policy document, once a ‘regulatory’ body start favouring using tactics such as this to favour certain members, they loose all credibility.
